Possible Sighting? Behind Fire Station in Chevy Chase behind Connecticut and Dunlop

Sara called at 1:45 today saying she saw a beagle at about 1:35PM barking and running behind the fire station at Connecticut and Dunlop in Chevy Chase. This is consistent with sightings in the past, but it's been at least a year since we've had a successful track. What Sara described was not detailed enough to confirm nor deny it was Sassafras, so we've asked her to continue to keep her eye out and try to capture a picture.

Anyone in that neighborhood, we ask to please do the same.

From our FAQ:  Q: What should I do if I see her?

Snap a picture on your phone/camera if you have one. Make a mental note of what you see (dog size and coloring, especially face and tail) and exact location. Then immediately call us (and email us later). Call us anytime! Calling her name or chasing her is very unlikely to work; it will just scare her and she’ll be off again.

Please don't chase her, or try to grab her. She's wicked fast, and she'll run away. She won't take a treat from a stranger's hand, so you will not be able to grab her. (Trust us! We know our dog!)

If she's in a yard where you can keep her contained, please do so. It might mean closing a gate, or tossing her something to eat from afar. Then call us ASAP!

The only possible way she might - and this is a big might - approach a person is if you take the least defensive posture possible for a human to take. That means you don't look at her, you lie down flat, and you make soft noises. She might - big might - might just come close to investigate.

Some more advice:

  • She is very skittish, so please ignore her and call us immediately
  • Please don't talk to her, yell at her or call her
  • Don't stare at her or clap your hands
  • Don't follow her
  • Any attention will only make her more afraid. Call us so we can help her.

  1. I don't know what made me think of your Sass this morning, but I am happy to see that there is an update, and I pray that your dog will be reunited with you and yours...

  2. Oh my God, my heart is beating fast. Last night I said my usual prayer I do every night for Sassafras. Although I am not religious I ask God to find Sassafras and bring her home and last night for some reason I was more adamant in asking this. It's probably because I have hope and faith for Sassafras' return and from reading other pet reunion stories, there is hope. Since I have tremendous passion and love for animals I think of them often. The struggles they go through, their welfare and care, the lost ones, etc...so when I saw your story it just touched my heart. Knowing pets being reunited is extreme joy. One less crack of sadness in the heart. And so of course reuniting Sassafras to you will be the best blessing of all for you.

Is it a sign for Tangles and me to think instantly and passionately of Sassafras and you? Maybe. Keep faith and I will be by your side.

I would call that fire department immediately! I'm thinking those firemen will be very willing and happy to help you.

I hope and pray for you that this is Sassafras and she will be home soon.

I will wait anxiously for great news! If you need any help to hire a scent tracker please do not hesitate to ask me. It would be my pleasure!

    1. Still thinking of Sassafras too. Everyday. I would love to know if the fire department was contacted. Someone must have her. I feel sad writing. Opening old wounds. Sassafras is always in my heart and on my mind.
