A Short Update

I know that some of you are wondering what happened with the possible sighting we had a couple of weeks ago.

First, let me say that the universe has terrible timing.  In this case, when the possible sighting arose we were in The Netherlands.  So, if you were wondering why we didn't jump, get out there, answer all the emails, etc., it was because we were 3,000 miles away.  In any case, the people who purported to see her never followed up with us, so that sighting was as solid as smoke.

We did, however, get a call the other day that lead us to call in Sam to do a track.  A woman in Sass' favorite Chevy Chase neighborhood called to say two beagles were running around her back yard, and while she couldn't get a picture, or close a gate, or any of the other actions at the top of our wish list, she was able to offer us the opportunity to bring Sam in and point to exactly where the dogs were - if Sass was there, then this was a great chance to try to pick up her scent.  We've heard off and on about two beagles running together, and we know of at least one instance where it was Sass.

Unfortunately, there was no Sass scent.  We did however, get a chance to reconnect with Sam, and with L., who we hadn't talked to in quite a while, and for that we are grateful.  Those two understand our search, and understand us after so many hours of following our Sassy girl's path.  They are old (new) friends.

We still miss Sass, and our daughter still asks when she's coming home.  To borrow from the Dixie Chicks:  They say time heals, but I'm still waiting.

  2. I'm not sure I am right, I read or heard somewhere that scent is harder to detect in winter. Actually it was about Dogs getting lost and not being able to track their scent back home or their home scent. Would this be the same case as a dog trying to track another dog's scent? With the snow I thought it was harder.

If it was me, and I can't tell you what to do for sure but hoping to find Sass, I would definitely stick with scoping out all territory in the Chevy Chase neighbourhood. Like you said it is her favourite area. I wish you all the best.

  3. Keep an eye out for dates on a deer hunt in Rock Creek Park. It would mean a lot more eyeballs in the park, and maybe you can have the park rangers tell the hunters to be on the look out for two beagles. I'm still hoping you find your dog.

  4. Jeff and Beth, I suspect you look at these listings periodically. I just wanted to forward it to you because I was having a look and I saw in the list dated March 25 in Montgomery County Animal Shelter Rockville MD a found Mix Beagle Female.

I hope this doesn't upset you. Since I am so far from you I still want to help as much as I can to find your Sassafras.

  5. It would be great if the woman who saw the two beagles would put food out for them and lure them to her backyard. If done all the time, the dogs will return often for the food and hopefully she could get them to come in her house. I would contact her about this.

I wish you all the best.
