Flyering Effort - Sunday, 3-5PM - Volunteers Needed

This Sunday, May 1, from 3-5 PM we'll be organizing efforts to place more permanent posters and flyers up, hand out business cards, and make a push to get the word out in hopes of generating a new sighting of Sassafras. If you are interested in helping, please email us at findsassafras@gmail.com and let us know the following:

1) how to reach you (email and phone),
2) which area(s) you'd be interested in helping with (see below)

We will coordinate responses, give you contact information for the group leaders for each area, let you know the meeting location for each area (where flyers and other plans will be available), and be very thankful.

Areas we plan to cover:

#1) Northern stretches of Rock Creek park - up 16th north of Military Road, major entrances to park, north and west side: This would be new and is our primary focus for the weekend. Our thinking is that if Sass is still around, this would be the most likely place for her to go that we have yet to collectively cover. All the trackers figure she'd end up in Rock Creek somewhere, to get away from the city noise & confusion, and find water and food.

#2) Adams Morgan, Woodley Park, Zoo, - Much of this area has been covered, but perhaps someone took her in or we've missed a lead in this area. As one of the trackers said, "Someone knows what happened to your dog - you've just got to find them."  It's home ground and the last place of a 100% sighting. (Note: the leaders covering this area may try to work Sunday morning. They will communicate directly with you about times.)

#3) Capitol/Union Station and up N. Capitol area to the cemeteries off Lincoln- Last sightings that sounded plausibly like Sass are in these areas... Again, those are old sightings, but if we're putting up more permanent signs, this area is worth doing. It is highly trafficked and the impact will be large for commuters.

#4) Other areas- We've been advised to cover a 10 square-mile radius from where she was lost... That's hard to do. If you have an area you'd be interested in putting up flyers and getting out the word, let us know. It might be just perfect to cover lots of areas that we're not yet considering. Flyers are available here on the blog, but we may also be able to drop some off for you. This is also a great option if you're not available Sunday..We're trying to keep track of all posted areas on the map. If you cover a new area, we've really like to get that on the map.

In other news, we're nearing 1000 page views for the blog and a new volunteer has just offered to help pass out cards in Rock Creek when he walks his dog in the morning. These things are very encouraging to us.

Please post this on facebook, tweet, email around.  All of your help is appreciated.

Thank you!
Beth & Jeff

Social media is working

Still no fresh sightings to report, but it is positive to see that the social media (combined with flyering efforts) are continuing to get the word out.

On Facebook, people are reposting our blog to their own site, and commenting on the Oliver Alert (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150172476006185&set=a.10150101792701185.266429.127500921184&type=1&theater ). A friend at our local Takoma Park unofficial dog park put a post on her facebook page and a friend of hers commented that she'd already seen the posters... that's great.

Got about 100 hits on the blog today and a few new friends (maybe from the DC Beagles repost on Facebook).

Others are emailing to friends, and new people are volunteering to help out.

If you can spread the word via social media, and put up flyers (see "Search Materials") in your neighborhood, that's excellent. Check out the "Map" link to see when and where flyers have already gone up. (Tracker last week said to cover at least a 10-mile radius from where Sass was lost... that's a lot of ground and we probably need to go further now.)

Also, if you have friends in major media willing to help out, let us know.

Many thanks, Jeff

Flyer Now Available

New flyers now added to the blog. Please feel free to download, post in your neighborhood, send around and share.

Recommended flyer is at http://www.4shared.com/document/UC0h3oCL/SassafrasFlyer_Apr21.html . (Hit "Download Now" button and please be patient as it takes 20 seconds to provide you the final link... the problem with free file sharing.)

We've still had no recent sightings, but have had some success reaching out to City and they've shared no reports of removing dead dogs... so we're still trying. Tracker says to post signs within 10-mile radius of last sighting (Adams Morgan area in DC, or possibly N. Capitol and Florida)... that's a huge area, so all help appreciated.

Facebook photo also at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150172476006185&set=a.10150101792701185.266429.127500921184&type=1&theater

Now on Washington Post and Craigslist

Thanks to everyone who has been pitching in with the search.

There's been no credible sightings of Sass in a number of days, but there's now an online ad in the Washington Post, with print ads starting tomorrow for a week (and a one day appearance in tomorrow's Express commuter paper). Plus, we have fresh ads on Craigslist.

Still working to get the City to review their records to see if they disposed of any dogs that might be her (they don't call you or check... very frustrating).

So, please do keep looking! We love our pup!  -Jeff

Please help me get back home!

My name is Sassafras. I ran away from my daycare while we were out for a walk.  I'm a beagle, so I like to cover a lot of ground, and people have already seen me all over the place.  I thought this adventure would be fun, and at first it was, but now I miss my parents and I want to go home, so please help find me and bring me back home!
